The Obamas: A Love Story across Five Generations of American History April 12, Friday, 10 am
Venue: DMK, Pódiumterem, Kossuth u. 1
Presenter: James Oberly, László Országh Chair in American Studies, Fulbright Lecturer The American president is both head of government and head of state. As such, his spouse is the „First Lady” and his family the „First Family.” Such terms are not known in parliamentary systems such as Hungary. The American „First Family” is a blend of the modern African-American family. On the president’s side, he descends from modern African migrants who experienced British colonialism, not American slavery. On the First Lady’s side, her family is the story of „up from slavery” in the American South, and later, the Great Migration to Chicago. Over five generations, the love story that is Barack and Michelle Obama, is part of American history from South Carolina to Hawaii, and meeting in Chicago.
"The New Buffalo or the Old Swindle? Oil & Gas & Mineral Revenues under today's American Indian Lands and Waters" April 11, Thursday, 6 pm
Presenter: James Oberly, László Országh Chair in American Studies, Fulbright Lecturer Economic development represents one of the main challenges for American Indian tribal governments. A few tribes struck it rich in the 1990s with casino projects, but for most tribes, casino revenues have fallen during the prolonged economic downturn. Rising commodity prices, especially for oil, gas, and minerals have led some US tribes to welcome drilling and mining as a means of economic development. Others have decided to fight new drilling and mining endeavors as a perceived environmental threat to the quality of tribal land and water. This presentation considers the mix of economics, law, history, and culture from the viewpoint of tribes practicing limited sovereignty within a federal political system.

"Men's Fight Only? Women in the American Civil War" March 21, Thursday, 6 pm In the decades prior to the Civil War, the lives of American women were shaped by what historians call “the Cult of True Womanhood”: devoting their lives’ full attention to their husbands and children in the private, feminized domestic households. The coming of the Civil War, however, forced women out of the artificial safety of this sphere, into public life in ways unimaginable even a few years before. Thousands of women in the North and South joined volunteer brigades to work as nurses, many were hired as spies or secret agents, some even served in the military disguised as men, not to mention the hundreds of thousands who performed all the men’s duties on the home front. This was the first war in American history in which women contributed to the war effort in a significant way. This talk commemorates them as part of the women’s history month as well as the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War.

"You can't wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club."
– Jack London
Journalist, author. Born John Griffith Chaney on January 12, 1876, in San Francisco, California. He carved out his own hardscrabble life as a teen. He rode trains, pirated oysters, shoveled coal, worked on a sealing ship on the Pacific and found employment in a cannery. In his free time he hunkered down at libraries, soaking up novels and travel books.
‘‘To Build a Fire’’ is still regarded by many as an American classic. London based the story on his own travels across the harsh, frozen terrain of Alaska and Canada in 1897-98 during the Klondike gold rush.
