Special Movie Night with the Director:'Journey Home'
Monday, October 20th, 6:00 pm
House of Arts & Literature (Széchenyi tér 7-8.)
Meet the director and get to know her journey in an open forum!
This is a multiple award winning documentary by director Réka Pigniczky. The movie is English/Hungarian with Hungarian subtitles.
Taking place in Budapest a half-century after the fateful events that took nearly 3,000 lives and forced more than 200,000 Hungarians to emigrate, Journey Home documents László Pigniczky’s daughters as they take a personal – sometimes disturbing, sometimes humorous – trek into the history of 1956. Armed only with their deceased father’s vague anecdotes and their own curiosity about the past, they try to piece together the puzzle of their father’s role in Hungary’s seemingly futile battle against the Soviet Union.
The sisters research their father’s story at the Hungarian secret service archives, interview surviving ‘56ers who might have known and fought with their father, consult with historians, and physically try to retrace their father’s footsteps from the first days of the revolution, through the street fights of early November, until his escape through Yugoslavia to the United States.
“It’s been a long time since I’ve seen anything this good. ... The American style of cinematic storytelling is masterful... The scenes are hard-hitting. The people are human.”
Béla István Szabó (Gondola.hu)
“I found myself choked up for 40 out of the film’s 88 minutes, because everything the movie had to say about the revolution, its aftermath, about émigré Hungarians both now and after the revolution, about memory and about our children – everything spoke to me personally, as an individual.”

American Presidents and Cities Visit Széchenyi High School
Tuesday, April 8th
Széchenyi István High School & Technical School (Király u. 44.)
Széchenyi High School was celebrating its traditional anniversary of Széchenyi István's birth with invited guest performers and lecturers. Among them was the project manager of the American Corner. He taught American civilization classes to three groups of students.
Some students learned about and discussed American Presidents and the presidential office, while others joined the class on U.S. cities. During these interactive sessions, students not only gathered new information about notable places and personas of American culture, but they were also able to mix in their preliminary knowledge from earlier geography, history, or English classes.
It is a common issue that most Hungarian high school English classes focus almost exclusively on British culture. Besides providing a unique content for students and teachers alike in its Library, the American Corner in Pécs offers a free service to any high school in the region that intends to make English classes more colorful. Our colleague will gladly visit any institution to teach the youth about American civilization. Contact us to make appointments! As described above, we currently offer two topics: American Presidents and American Cities.
