Active Citizenship

Volunteers

Would you like to join the AC Team?

The American Corner Debrecen welcomes volunteers who would like to spend some of their free time in a useful way. Dedicating a couple of hours a week to help out may teach you a lot of new things and can also look good in your CV. Find out how you could contribute too! Visit us in person or send an email!

Here are a couple of examples about activities you may get involved in:

  • Hostess tasks,
  • administrative tasks: updating database,
  • creative tasks: brainstorming about new events,
  • library-related tasks: from writing book reviews to putting books back on the shelf :)
  • computer-related tasks: updating website,
  • marketing: help us spread the word,
  • any many more....

And if you are an American living in Debrecen, or the region, your help as a Conversation Coordinator during the weekly Club would be greatly appreciated!
Let us know if you"d like to join us: debrecen@americancorner.hu

Former AC Volunteers

„I only came to improve my speaking skills. What I got is self-confidence, extended vocab, better pronunciation and shorter reaction time. Apart from these language-related amendments, I found some true friends here with whom we come together not only at the Corner, I could get into adventures like being the light and sound technician of a brilliant theatre team, I was given the chance of participating in some memorable events like presentations, celebrations and parties and I seem to be a member of a rock band or what… The point is that when I entered the building of the Corner in September 2008, I was full of excitement and it hasn’t changed ever since, moreover I started to miss conversation clubs when I couldn’t attend. I won’t say ’’American Corner has changed my life’’ because it sounds far too theatrical, but it is partially true. Give it a try: if you have the motivation, an open mind and the will to meet new people and discover new things about the world you live in (involuntarily or not), you will certainly like it.”

"Why do I like American Corner? It’s not an easy question. Not because I can’t find any reasons, it’s because I have that many. First of all, I got to know a lot of awesome people. It doesn’t matter how old you are or what your nationality is. It’s just a bunch of cool people who are connected by the language (at first, then later…).Second, they have the hottest programs ever: from interesting presentations about the USA to English and Hungarian conversation clubs. You can borrow books and videos to improve your English or watch them at the Movie Nights. Basically it’s having fun and learning at the same time-it might be a cliché, but it really is true. AC makes you think about the world or different issues more open-minded, it strengthens the relations between the nations, and makes you like English/Hungarian in a way, schools or obligatory lessons just simply can’t.

"I remember my first time here. My English teacher told the class about a panel talk on the `08 USA Elections at the AC.
I wasn’t very excited about it at first but I attended anyway. There was this brilliant versatility which cannot be found anywhere else in Debrecen. The only connecting link between people is a language they all speak or want to speak. Understanding, accepting, tolerance. Those are vital parts of living in a big community and I think we still need to master them. The American Corner can help you to open your mind to cultures you have never heard of. You may think now `What is she talking about? It’s called American Corner for a reason…´. Well, we’re talking about the biggest melting pot on Earth."
